This image has some unique vertical surface illuminated. They direct all attention to the reception desk in the Novotel Century Hong Kong Hotel. They do this by grazing the wall behind the desk from the bottom and the top, grazing the column next to the desk, and even grazing the front of the reception desk. The high illuminance values of light in this area direct all attention to the desk and there is no doubt where you are supposed to go when you enter the hotel.

The image to the right shows us how we can graze a wall in multiple ways. The first is by placing a fixture at the top of a textured glass to call attention to the unique pattern and colors of the glass. The next is by placing a luminaire at the bottom of a wall and grazing upward. This technique helps to emphasize the texture of the stone wall by creating shadows and highlights.

The image to the left uses a wall grazer to illuminate the wall behind the reception desk. This tactic allows for a continuous flow of movement through the space and preventing people from becoming confused in an already small space. Wall grazing can also be seen to direct the flow of traffic in the space by illuminating the walls on either side of the back staircase.

The wall washers here emphasize the texture of the wall. However, since the luminaires are not continuous and the wall has large extrusions from the main wall there are noticeable strips along the wall.
